A large area measuring around 200m along one side and enclosed by the old Oyamakaido (Miyamasuzaka, Dogenzaka), Jingu Dori, Route 246, and Meiji Dori, will be opened up to foot traffic. The long-distance coach stops occupying most of the present East and West Exit forecourts will move to the first and second floor of Shibuya Station, or to the basement floor, away from ground level.
The JR North and Central Exits to the north and south of this space measuring around 200m on one side, and the vertical shafts and taxi stands one of each to the east and west divide off the four open areas of Hachiko Square, Patio Miyamasu, the East Exit forecourt and West Exit forecourt, with the space beneath the Yamanote and Saikyo Lines (main platforms) connecting these to form a single space. |

The conversion of part of Route 246 to a bypass will leave the original Route 246 at ground level to be used mainly by vehicles with business in Shibuya. With this, pedestrians will be able to access streets on the other side via pedestrian crossings rather than overhead walkways, as they can now at the Hachiko-mae and Miyamasuzaka intersections. Just as Hachiko Square forms the gateway to Dogenzaka, Center-gai and Koen Dori, the East and West Exit forecourts will provide ground level access to districts such as Ebisu and Sakuragaoka. And open spaces of this sort at ground level are significant in another way too: just imagine activities that could flower there, from morning markets to buskers and festivals. This would be a definitive step toward making a Shibuya that is pleasant to stroll in reality. |
