The increasingly complex functions of Shibuya Station and its precincts should be confined to transport and a limited range of commercial uses. This would enhance the station's function as a transfer point, and with the station forecourts acting more as gateways to the district, cultural and retail facilities, public amenities and housing would soon concentrate around the station and precincts. The floor space currently occupied by the Toyoko Department Store would be transferred to the surrounding site, with high-use, high-rise buildings erected as part of the area's redevelopment forming an attractive facade enclosing the station precinct. In turn, an attractive, functional station and precincts would provide a superb setting and support for this surrounding architecture. |
